Tongue-tie clinic launches in Lewes

It's happening! I'm so happy to announce that the joint clinic run by myself (as my alter ego, Dr Rebecca Maini) and Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant Jenny Baldwin will be running for the first time on Friday 28th February in Lewes, East Sussex.

Jenny is a mum of 4 boys, based in Bexhill and has 7 years of experience helping mums with breastfeeding, assessing any problems with latching, positioning and any possible tongue-tie issues. She also has 8+ years of personal breastfeeding experience across all 4 of her boys which continues with her 20 month old.

As for myself, if you don't already know, I am a mum of 5 year old twins, one of whom had tongue-tie so I have personal experience of the agonising pain that can be felt when trying to feed. I also have first-hand experience of the relief that can be felt when the tongue-tie is released! For me it was instant, when my son had his snipped at 7 days, I fed him straight after and the difference was immense. I then managed to continue feeding both exclusively for 15 months - something that was very special for all of us.

Professionally, I have 15 years of experience as an NHS dentist, including 2 years working in the Maxillo-facial Surgery department of a busy NHS hospital, so I'm quite used to dealing with mouths and was already qualified to divide tongue-ties. I wasn't however used to such tiny mouths other than my own babies' so when I decided I wanted to run a tongue-tie division service I knew I wanted to undertake extra training with a midwife to gain some experience specifically with babies. I was on the waiting list for 2 years but completed my training with midwife Jayne Threlfall in Southampton in December 2019 and here we are. Jenny and I linked up to provide an exceptional all-round service to enable more mothers to successfully manage to breastfeed should they want to.

We'll be running our joint clinic from my practice, Mermaid Dental Surgery in Lewes, so I am very familiar with the clinical environment we'll be working in. I have also made my surgery as cheerful as possible with so many of my colourful photos up on the wall! I've heard so many stories of local mothers struggling to access tongue-tie services within a decent amount of time so I hope we can help ease this and provide a professional and efficient service.

Jenny and Rebecca are both also available for home visits, please enquire below.

If anyone would like any more information, please read more on our dedicated Tongue-tie page or contact me. We are accepting referrals from Birthing Centres, Health Visitors, GPs, Midwives and Lactation Consultants or self-referral for assessments and/or treatment.
