If you read my Magic Mushrooms post, you’ll know I love lying on the woodland floor photographing tiny fungi. But I’m not sure those photos show just how small some of these little things really are. So here’s the shroom version of What You See vs What I See! 🍄
To most people walking through the woods in East Sussex, this is just a patch of soggy leaves and twigs. I snapped the one on the left on my phone, it shows how easy it would be to walk straight past without a second glance…
But get down low, look a bit closer, and there’s a whole tiny world hiding in there…

Some of these mushrooms were less than 5mm across, perched on stalks so thin they looked like glass. From standing height, you’d barely notice them at all. Down at their level, with the autumn light glowing through them, they look like something out of a fairy tale.

For anyone curious about the kit, I shot the close-ups on my Nikon D750 with a Nikkor 105mm macro lens, using only natural light (of course!). A lot of it is patience – waiting for the light to shift, moving a wet leaf here and there to get rid of reflections, and accepting that you’re going to get very muddy knees.

Why I love these comparisons
This is exactly how I work on brand shoots too. Where you might see an ordinary corner of your office, shop or garden, I’m spotting the light, the textures and the little details that could tell your story beautifully. Sometimes the most magical images are hiding right under your nose – or in this case, under your feet!
