Welcome back to What You See vs What I See, my little series showing the difference a professional eye can make. Where you might see an ordinary (or downright unpromising!) spot, I’m already seeing the shot. (Catch up on the rest of the series here.)
This one comes from a branding shoot with Sam Eaton of Mindability Consulting. Sam had travelled down from Bury St Edmunds, about three hours away, and was staying at Brighton Marina for a conference. With time tight, we kept the shoot right on her doorstep at the marina.
We’d hoped to weave some greenery into her images… and then discovered the marina isn’t exactly bursting with foliage! After a good wander, the only decent bit of green we could find was a row of small hedges. Outside Nando’s.
Here’s a phone snap so you can see what we were working with:

Not the most inspiring, right? Here’s what we created:

A few tricks made it work:
- Sitting Sam down to hide the sign on the bench, and as much of the boring metal bench as possible
- Shooting from a high angle so the hedges filled the frame, because they really weren’t very tall
- Using my prism to turn the bench behind her into a sparkly blur – an effect Sam and I both love!

We were both thrilled with the results! In fact, Sam loved working together so much that she went on to book my Kaleidoscope package, so we spent the whole of the next year shooting together, season after season. 🌈
“We laughed from the moment we met, it was all so easy and the session seemed to fly by… She is so creative – if you are serious about your brand, invest in Bex.”
